Reducing False Alerts Without Reducing Safety

A common reason people abandon smart home systems is simple: too many notifications. False alerts create stress. Stress creates avoidance. This guide helps you calm the system — while keeping safety strong.

Why False Alerts Happen

  • Sensors placed near vents or airflow
  • Direct sunlight hitting motion sensors
  • Pets triggering motion or contact events
  • Sensitivity set too high
  • Too many overlapping rules

Step 1 — Fix Placement First

  • Do not face sensors toward vents or heaters
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Angle motion sensors slightly downward when possible

Step 2 — Lower Sensitivity (Then Test)

Start at “medium.” Run for 48 hours. Adjust gradually. Avoid swinging from “too sensitive” to “not sensitive enough.”

Step 3 — Use Calm Alert Windows

  • Night lighting alerts only at night
  • Entry alerts only when home should be quiet
  • Delay alerts by 15–30 seconds to prevent “one-off triggers”

Step 4 — The Calm Filter

Use this rule:

If an alert creates anxiety without reducing risk — redesign it.

Outcome: Fewer alerts, higher trust, and a system that people actually keep using.
